Road Trip 499.66 miles

Last Friday TDH, the Frenchies and I drove from La Jolla to Half Moon Bay with a quick stop in Santa Cruz along the way.  We woke up at 4am and finished dinner at 11:30pm.  It was an epic travel day!  Percy and Nacho were troopers while healthy snacks and the rare curly fry kept us awake.  Here's a few pictures and dance party videos from the trip.

Dig - DIY Bathtub Garden

Our rental in La Jolla came with a giant bathtub that was so unsteady we had to sign off in the lease we wouldn't sue in case it caused any bodily harm.  So after months of it sitting in the corner of our shower (our shower is larger than most NYC apartments) I asked the boys to move it outside.  I had been itching to plant carrots but they need a deep container.  The dogs and chickens eat anything we plant in the ground so a raised bathtub bed was the perfect solution!

What you will need
- An old bathtub or large deep container.
- Good dirt, go for the organic stuff at your local nursery.  (Remember, you will be eating all this goodness and you wouldn't want to ruin it with cheap soil.)
- Compost from your kitchen and/or neighborhood chickens.
- Seeds.  Think about what you love to eat.  (I planted carrots, 2 types of kale and broccoli.  We feed the dogs carrots and I could eat kale 3 meals a day.)
- Gloves.
- Something to mix the dirt with, a shovel, stick or just your hands if you don't mind dirt under the fingernails.
Fresh picked kale from the bathtub

To do
1.  Find some large rocks or bricks for the bottom to ensure good drainage.
2.  Add a layer of dirt.
3.  Add a layer of chicken manure compost and/or store bought compost.
4.  Mix it all together.
5.  Add another layer of dirt.
6.  Fill up your container a few inches from the top because the dirt will compress and sink in over the next week.
7.  Using a shovel or your hand create rows for your seeds.  Read the packaging labels for directions on spacing and planting seed depth.
8.  Add the seeds.  Cover with soil and water gently.
9.  Continue to water gently for the first few weeks.  Once the plants are set feel free to use the hose or your leftover pasta water (after it's cooled :).

Have you planted in any crazy containers?  I would love to hear some ideas.  PS - My favorite seed catalog at the moment is Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds.

Destination - Big Sur, California

Stay
-  For our mini moon TDH and I stayed at the Ventana Inn - the rooms were a decent size, decked out in plush linens, toiletries, a gigantic bathroom with gorgeous tile, the patio was rustic and overlooked a huge open field, we saw deer each morning - the rooms are PRICEY, a little cheaper than Post Ranch, BUT you can use the hotel shuttle service for rides around town and the daily afternoon wine and cheese tasting could potentially make a complete meal
-  For the ultimate luxury book a room or house at the Post Ranch Inn - or just sneak in by saying you are having dinner at the restaurant for one of the best views in Big Sur
-  Camp or yurt at Treebones
-  Stay in one of the oldest hotels in the area at Deetjen's

Move
Bring your hiking boots.  Big Sur is full of magical trails, some well know, some so hidden TDH and I couldn't even find our way.  Here is a link for a good overall hiking guide

- Salmon Creek Falls - a nice change from the crowded McWay Falls
-  Julia Pfeiffer State Park - McWay Falls is the high point - the park is huge - bring a picnic lunch from Big Sur Bakery
- Esalen hot springs - this is a must! - there are no words to describe the view - it's pitch black and your hot tub which is powered by the natural hot springs hangs off the edge of a cliff - clothing is OPTIONAL - you have to make a reservation - the only time the public can go is between 1-3am, take a nap during the day - I understand this isn't for everyone but TDH was able to handle it and I believe you can too - trust me, it looks like you are on another planet.

Eat/Drink
- Nepenthe - make a reservation or be prepared to wait for 30 minutes to an hour - you can order drinks and take them down to the look out deck - beautiful view any time of the day but sunset is stunning - bring bug spray! - margaritas are tasty - the food is ok, simple menu, simple tastes, but I don't think people visit Nepenthe for the food, the view is unbeatable
-  Big Sur Bakery - call ahead, the restaurant isn't open everyday but the bakery was tasty!  You can also drool over their cookbook like me

TriRock Shoot

A few photos from the TriRock photoshoot on Tuesday.

BORELLI scarf keeping me warm between takes

Marisol adding the finishing touches

What is TriRock?  Ever run a Rock n Roll Half or Full Marathon?  Similar concept.  Live bands cheering you on while you swim, bike and run, finish line is more like a red carpet celebrity party and last but not least, free beer!  Keep an eye out for the campaign next year.

A big thank you to the team I worked with -

Tag - Design Manager, couldn't ask for a better person to dump buckets of freezing water over my head.
Felipe Loureiro - Buffest male athlete I've ever seen, and I imagine an inspiring triathlon coach.
Marisol - Make-up artist, she can work wonders with a little blush and olive oil spray.
Nils - Photographer, instantly makes you feel comfortable.
